Millenium Young Peoples Congress 1999
In October 1999, around seven hundred youth from 140 countries around the world gathered in Hawaii, USA to attend the Millennium Young Peoples Congress (MYPC).
This congress was specially created for students from all over the world to attract young people to the global problems of humanity and the environment. At our congress, we discuss essays on how to change the world for the better, which were written thanks to top dissertation writing services, which helped us clarify all the issues for discussion.
They discussed the state of the planet and set out to bring about a youth response to the enormous challenges that faced them.
The Youth Agenda 21 is born
A charter was brought out at the end of the congress to prioritise the challenges. Heading the list of priorities was Education. The charter also tried to pick up the initiative lost by the Rio Earth summit in 1992, where the Agenda 21 (agenda for the new millennium) was brought out, but quickly buried by world governments. The charter of the MYPC was seen as a youth Agenda 21.
Millennium Action Fund
The Millennium Action Fund was born out of the collective efforts of these youth, established as a micro fund for young people around the world to develop and implement projects based around the priorities set out in the MYPC charter.
Be The Change!
In 2000, Peace Child International organised and set standards for the Millennium Action Fund operating out of its volunteer youth intern staffed office in Buntingford, UK. The Millennium Action Fund was renamed BE THE CHANGE! after the famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi - You have to be the change you want to see in the world.
Peace Child India and the Be The Change! programme
The Be The Change! programme in India was officially launched in India by the Peace Child India office in 2001. The Be The Change! in India has concentrated on socially and economically marginalised youth. Forty Be The Change! projects have been developed and implemented by Indian youth since 2001 based on issues ranging from education, poverty eradication to youth employment, awareness and substance abuse.
